In Argentina, the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex-like dinosaur, the Meraxes gigas, have been discovered.
Four tons of muscle, ten meters long and an overpowered jaw. This is the Meraxes gigas. This carnivore, cousin of the famous Tyrannosaurus rex, lived in northern Patagonia (Argentina) 90 million years ago. “It’s the time of the giants. You don’t find dinosaurs that big, neither before nor after this period”says paleontologist Juan Canale at the Ernesto Bachmann Museum in Neuquen (Argentina).
In 2012, around thirty researchers made their first discovery: a skull more than a meter long. Ten years later, the skeleton of the mastodon is completed, with a distinctive sign: its arms, only 60 centimeters. For paleontologists, this is an unprecedented discovery. “Thanks to Meraxes, we can specify the true size of the skull, arms and legs”, says Juan Canale. Thanks to these advances, specialists could be able to clarify the living conditions of these animals from another time.
