A French father whose request to obtain a document prior to Canadian permanent residence had been rejected can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Félix Devismes requested a review of the file and finally received his Quebec selection certificate (CSQ) on Wednesday, said Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, solidarity MP for Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne. He will therefore be able to submit an application for permanent residence and will no longer have to leave the country at the end of May.
“I’m very happy for him and for his family obviously. He has been here for eight years and has a son and a partner,” underlined Mr. Cliche-Rivard in an interview. Last April, The duty reported the story of this man who was refused his CSQ in January 2024, in particular for having submitted documents in black and white, instead of in color, and for having failed to provide certain evidence that was impossible to find.
The elected official from Québec solidaire then sent a letter to the Minister of Immigration, Christine Fréchette, to encourage her to change the “unreasonable demands” of her ministry on the administrative level.
“I would still like to thank the minister for reconsidering her decision and that of the ministry,” Guillaume Cliche-Rivard argued this Wednesday. The latter added that he felt a real desire on the part of Christine Fréchette to resolve Mr. Devismes’ case.
The member for Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne, however, believes that the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) must do some “examination of conscience” regarding its ways of proceeding. “Felix, this is one example among many others. There are several unjustified refusals like this. It’s not just an anecdote,” argued the man who previously worked as an immigration lawyer.
Mr. Devismes “had the passion, the determination and the parental responsibility to fight to stay here with his child,” continues Mr. Cliche-Rivard. “But does everyone have this ability to seize the media and politicians for an unreasonable refusal of the MIFI? To ask the question, is to answer it. »
At the time these lines were written, The duty was still waiting for the response from MIFI.
Further details will follow.
