“Justice took a long time”regretted Jean-Paul Mattei, deputy for Pyrénées-Atlantiques and president of the MoDem group in the National Assembly, Monday on franceinfo, after the acquittal of François Bayrou in the affair of the MoDem European parliamentary assistants.
As François Bayrou was released, some political observers already imagine him joining the government of Gabriel Attal, which is still incomplete. Questioned on this subject, Jean-Paul Mattei “do not think” that becoming a minister is “the primary objective” of the current mayor of Pau. The latter, also president of MoDem, must above all “catch your breath, your dynamics to relaunch and carry our ideas, as he knows how to do very well”believes Jean-Paul Mattei.
The president of the centrist party in the National Assembly, however, is waiting to see “a little more social side, a little more humanist”Who “must be embodied in the new government”. And why not figures from the MoDem, since this current, affirms Jean-Paul Mattei, has the “ability to open up this majority a little bit, a little bit in the spirit of 2017”. “We would like to see people who embody more of this openness on both sides”.
Concerning the trial of Marine Le Pen scheduled for the fall of 2024, which also concerns parliamentary assistants and which is also based on suspicions of embezzlement of public funds, the MoDem MP warns: “Each case must be examined on its merits”. It is therefore impossible for Jean-Paul Mattei to see “similarities” between the case targeting François Bayrou and the future trial of Marine Le Pen, since it “does not know the substance of the issue concerning the National Rally well”.
