Addressing The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that season 2 was going to be a natural evolution since the final events of the first season.
To direct this second season, Hwang Dong-hyuk did not tap into fan theories or what viewers asked to see in the series. On the contrary, it provides for pick up where the protagonists left off and continue the story as originally planned :
“Instead of trying to live up to viewer expectations, I just thought about the last moment Gi-hun turned away from boarding, and thought about what he was going to do next. There will naturally be a stream of events leading up to the end of the season. I can’t share details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a completely new person at the end of the first season, so season two is going to talk about what this new Gi-hun is going to do and how things are going to go with this new type of character“
Sure enough, the newly redheaded main character has grown more serious and determined to save people by going after the creators of this cruel game. Interviewed by All K Pop, the main character clarified that this season 2 will be focused on the theme of “revenge“.

The casting
Netflix unveiled in a trailer a large part of the cast of this second season. The last survivor and winner of the game, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), will be back. This is also the case for the leader Front Man (Lee Byung-Hun), as well as the officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) and the recruiter (Gong Yoo).
