Many British nationals have surrendered “in good faith” in the UK for the holiday season and “find it difficult to reach their country of residence”, the Interior Ministry told AFP. Place Beauvau has decided to send “tolerance guidelines” to border police personnel so that everyone can reach their residence.
The blocking concerned the British officially resident in a country of the European Union other than France and who, to get there, usually cross French territory by car. Those residing in France were not affected, nor were passengers on Eurostar trains.
The British Foreign Office had asked “urgently for clarifications from the French government”, and advised its nationals to check with carriers before traveling. The French Interior Ministry had for its part declared to AFP that it was about the application of border instructions, updated on December 18, and imposing a “compelling reason” to enter the territory.
