They left the room disappointed and angry. Victims and families of victims of the Trèbes and Carcassonne attacks criticized the verdict rendered by the Paris Special Assize Court on Friday February 23, after five weeks of trial. Only the terrorist’s ex-girlfriend was found guilty of terrorist conspiracy. She was sentenced to five years in prison, whereas eleven years had been requested by the prosecution.
In total,Seven people were in the dock, six men and one woman aged between 24 and 35. Four of the five defendants tried for terrorist conspiracy were acquitted for this characterization, and only sentenced to sentences ranging from six months to four years in prison for related offenses.
According to the president of the Special Assize Court, the accused had moral responsibility and not criminal responsibility. “Obviously, it’s disappointing. Obviously, the victims are a little in shock”, underlines Henri de Beauregard, lawyer for the civil parties. Some victims and families of victims now hope that the national anti-terrorism prosecution will appeal this verdict.
