Preparation for the risk of fires for next summer has already begun. On Tuesday April 11, the government announced an unprecedented strengthening of resources to fight forest fires.
The images of giant flames ravaging the forests, the government does not want to see them again. So to avoid this, air and ground means of control have been reinforced. France now has 47 aircraft against 38 nine months ago according to Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior. Among them, water bomber planes and helicopters but also nearly 500 additional firefighters mobilized for 2023.
72,000 hectares went up in smoke in 2022
At the Cazaux air base (Gironde), the Ministers for Ecological Transition and Agriculture have also signed a massive reforestation plan. Nearly a billion trees will be replanted within ten years “with the objectives of reconstituting the forest where it was destroyed and then of making the transition from the forest massifs”, said Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. In 2022, a total of 72,000 hectares went up in smoke in France, seven times more than the average for the past 15 years.
