Reindeer under the scrubland in Ardèche

The geology of the territory offers privileged areas for the study of sinkholes.

For Nicolas LATEUR, archaeologist, prehistorian and paleontologist at the Departmental Archaeological Pole of Ardèche at MuséAl in Alba-la-Romaine.

These natural traps allow us to reconstruct the environment and climates of the past, and in particular the biodiversity that existed at a time T.

It’s hard to imagine that 10, 20, 30, 40,000 years ago, when the Chauvet cave was designed, for example, we could have had reindeer. However, it is quite true, we had very large populations of Rennes.

Reindeer Food can allow us to reconstruct the plant landscape as it must have been in prehistoric times.

All these bones are collected, studied by archaeologists, by paleontologists and come to feed the archaeological collections of the museums which mark out the departmental territory.
