Germany: rehabilitating bunkers for prevention?

In Germany, an association of mayors is calling for the urgent renovation of World War II bunkers. There would be 600 shelters, if we add those from the Cold War, which could accommodate 500,000 people. Elected officials believe that they could be used if the conflict in Ukraine degenerates.

Hundreds of bunkers built on German territory are remnants of World War II and the Cold War. For around thirty years, and the fall of the wall, they have no longer been maintained. But should they be put back into service? This is what an association of mayors is asking for today. “The situation has changed, there is war on European soil, it is a new threat”explains Timm Fuchs of the German Cities Federation.

Create small shelters

The problem is that many cannot be rehabilitated, because they have been converted into art centers, or leisure centers. But around 600 of them would have remained as they were, like in a Berlin metro station. A rehabilitation would be very expensive, because a lot of work is to be planned: the sealing of the doors, the ventilation or communication systems, not to mention the parts, which have completely disappeared. If the reopening of the huge bunkers seems unlikely, the authorities are considering creating small shelters throughout the territory.
