Faced with inflation, Spain is trying to relieve the wallet of travelers by opting for a drastic measure: free regional trains. Until December, users will be able to travel free of charge between the twelve largest Iberian cities.
At Barcelona station (Spain), users rush to the machine to collect the sesame: a pass to take the train for free until December, provided they take it regularly. A measure taken by the Spanish government to fight against the inflation that the population is suffering the brunt of. “Now you can travel for free until December”rejoices a traveler. “I will save 400 euros per month”, abounds a Spanish user. The famous pass will be fully refunded if used sixteen times before the end of the year.
A costly measure
The government wants to help travelers while promoting an environmentally friendly means of transport. Raquel Sanchez, Spanish Minister of Transport, welcomes the 100,000 beneficiaries of this action despite the cost of 431 million euros. In Île-de-France alone, total free urban transport is valued at 4 billion euros per year.
