In Brittany, to preserve water reserves and avoid shortages, two farmers decided to cultivate differently. They have been practicing regenerative agriculture for 20 years. This technique restores the quality of agricultural soils and encourages the development of organic matter.

In Guipavas (Finistère), Nicolas Hallégouët, potato producer, is a happy farmer. 20 years ago, with his brother Roland, they embarked on regenerative agriculture. To protect his land, he plants clover, which regulates humidity. “In summer, it first makes it possible to make a real parasol for the ground. In winter, it makes the umbrella. It manages both the lack of water in summer and excess water in winter”he explains.

Less time on machines

In this field, the harvest of wheat and potatoes follows one another. The previous wheat crop serves as a natural fertilizer for the current potato crop. The farm includes 33 hectares of cultivation. The main productions are potatoes and shallots. The ground never degrades, so no need for fertilizer. With regenerative agriculture, they have divided by three the number of hours spent on the machines, as many savings on fuel bills. Every day, the two brothers sell nearly 750 kilos of their production.
