Édouard Perrin, investigative journalist, member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), looks back on the “Uber Files” investigation, Sunday July 10.
The “Uber Files” reveal the influence strategy of Uber’s ride-hailing company with the French government. “In all countries, the Uber group comes up against regulations for taxis. These regulations must be weakened or even eliminated. We must lobby. So we are going to lend ourselves to a game of influence, extremely pressing, sharp”specifies Édouard Perrin, investigative journalist, member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Sunday July 10.
Uber had notably developed the “Killswitch”, a tool that disconnected computers from its servers. “In a quasi-industrial way, you have a system that can be criminally qualified as an obstruction of organized justice”, says Édouard Perrin. By helping Uber, did Emmanuel Macron come close to legality? “I would not say that, because he can say that he is defending interests which are under the jurisdiction of his ministry. In terms of morality, there is a concern for transparency”says the journalist.
