For the third time, the self-determination referendum in New Caledonia tilted in favor of no, Sunday, December 12. Emmanuel Macron spoke about the situation during a speech.
In what state of mind do the separatists find themselves at the end of the referendum which leaned towards the no? “The promise of common destiny must continue to guide us“, declared in his speech by Emmanuel Macron, following the ballot. “It is in a way a call for calm for the non-separatists and the separatists“, indicates the journalist Hugo Capelli, live from Nouméa (New Caledonia).
The separatists do not intend to stop there. “Throughout the campaign, they demanded the postponement of the poll in this context of Covid-19. They had very harsh words against the state. For them this maintenance was ‘a declaration of war’. The separatists have warned that they will not recognize the ballot and that they will recognize it in the coming days before the Nations united“, continues the journalist. The situation is therefore very tense on the archipelago, divided between pro-independence and the pro-France.
