Reducing gasoline taxes is a “bad idea”, says Eric Girard

Reducing gasoline taxes, as demanded by Éric Duhaime’s Conservative Party, is a “bad idea”, Finance Minister Eric Girard said on Friday.

Mr. Duhaime asked the government to give a break to motorists who are hard hit by the drastic increase in the price of gasoline at the pump.

To hear Eric Girard Friday morning at the Blue Room, we quickly understood that it would not be in his budget which will be tabled next Tuesday.

” My God ! he launched. What a bad idea! »

He suggested that the high price of fuels could help Quebec reduce its dependence on oil and reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in accordance with its international commitments.

Moreover, even if Quebec were to reduce the QST or the fuel tax, it might not even translate into lower prices at the pump. ” Margins [bénéficiaires] oil companies could increase,” argued the minister.
