(OTTAWA) Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is open to reducing the number of plastic products being made as the planet works on a global treaty to end plastic pollution.
However, the minister believes that this idea could become one of the biggest sticking points in the negotiations, which are supposed to conclude at the end of next year.
The second round of these talks ends Friday in Paris. Mr. Guilbeault mentioned that Canada will host the next round in about a year.
Environmental groups say the only real way to eliminate plastic pollution is to make less plastic in the first place.
Canada has not officially supported these calls in the treaty talks, but in an interview Guilbeault said he “is not opposed to them”.
It also indicates that the government is about to announce new measures to prevent the export of plastic waste from Canada without knowing what will happen next.
