(Re)discover Robin Wright in five films

As an actress, she made whole generations of viewers dream in the soap novel “Santa Barbara”, as well as moviegoers in “La Princesse Bouton d’or”. It was then for several episodes of the series “Le Château de cartes” that she tried her hand at directing. Then with two episodes of the first half of “Ozark” which just landed on Netflix.

“Forrest Gump” (1994)

After “La Princesse Bouton d’or”, Robin Wright’s career took off. She continues with “Denial”, in which she is the headliner, then with “Les Anges de la nuit” on the set of which she meets Sean Penn, with whom she will marry in 1996. But it is the feature film “Forrest Gump” which puts her in the spotlight. She plays Jenny, the great love of the character played by Tom Hanks, which will earn her a nomination for the Golden Globes.

“She’s So Lovely” (1997)

She continues to make her way. In 1995, she appeared in “The Obsession”, written and directed by Sean Penn. Then Nick Cassavetes hires her to give the reply to her husband and John Travolta in “She’s So Lovely”, this romantic drama written by John Cassavetes and brought to the cinema after his death. The feature earned him his second SAG Award nomination.

“The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” (2009)

For more than a decade, Robin Wright Penn alternated roles in popular productions – “A Bottle Overboard”, “White Laurel”, “Beowulf”, “Power Games” – and independent feature films – “The Promise “, “Virgin”. In “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”, an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Rebecca Miller, also in the screenplay and in the production, the actress plays an apparently tidy housewife, while Blake Lively plays the young Pippa. The film toured festivals, was presented in Berlin and then in Toronto before benefiting from a limited release in the United States.

“Wonderwoman” (2017)

The film career of Robin Wright – she abandoned the “Penn” following her divorce – continues as before in what must be called general indifference. In 2013, Netflix broadcast “The House of Cards”, a political series with an unusual bite in which she played Claire Underwood, wife of the one who became President of the United States, Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), for 73 episodes. She won a Golden Globe and garnered an impressive number of nominations for various awards. In addition, she produces the last three seasons and takes the opportunity to dive into the production of 10 episodes. After this role of calculating woman, unshakeable and thirsty for power, Marvel offers her the role of General Antiope in his “Wonder Woman” where moviegoers discover her, muscular and in command of the army of the Amazons.

“Land” (2021 movie)

Wright does not give up directing and decides to put himself on stage – and for the first time on the big screen – in “Land”, which was released quietly during the pandemic. The feature film tells the story of a traumatized woman who decided to live in isolation in the mountains of Wyoming. We also had the opportunity to see her again in the “director’s cut” version of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and we will find her in “Where All Light Tends to Go”, in which she gives the reply to Billy Bob Thornton and whose filming began last November.
