Prior to the loss, the Oilers had won nine of their first 10 games for the first time in franchise history. They were held in check in two power play on Tuesday after becoming the first team since the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007 to start a season with a power play goal in each of their first 10 games.

The Red Wings have won three in a row and their rebuilding efforts finally seem to be paying off.

Dylan Larkin gave the Red Wings a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, rookie Moritz Seider scored in an empty net and Alex Nedeljkovic ended his night with 31 saves.

Jesse Puljujarvi scored on a breakaway with 34.2 seconds left in the second period to put the Oilers two goals behind.

Until Tuesday, the Oilers had trailed only once before entering the third period, in a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 27.

Connor McDavid closed the lead to one goal in the first minute of the third, scoring for the ninth time this season. The two-time NHL MVP has collected at least one point in each of his 11 games this season.

Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 35 shots in his first game of the season, replacing Mikko Koskinen in the first of a five-game road trip.
