Red Sox, on track to finish last again, fire manager

The Boston Red Sox fired director of baseball operations Chaim Bloom on Thursday, as the team heads to the bottom of the American League East for the third time in four years.

The team confirmed the information before the start of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees, who won the first two games of this series to join the Red Sox in the standings.

Bloom had left the Tampa Bay Rays to join the Red Sox, and was tasked with rebuilding the team’s pipeline and bringing some financial stability to a club that had a reputation for spending money. One of those early moves was trading 2018 American League MVP Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Red Sox said general manager Brian O’Halloran “has been promoted to a more senior role within baseball operations” of the team.

O’Halloran will lead the department on an interim basis, along with his deputies Eddie Romero, Raquel Ferreira and Michael Groopman.
