The first thing you’ll say about Calgary-based art rock collective Crack Cloud’s third album is how tasty the lyrics are from drummer and vocalist Zach Choy. Excerpt from The Mediumto music from the Ziggy period of Bowie: “ POP and ROCK this is how it goes / It’s these four chords that everybody knows / Catchy platitudes for the restless mind / Peppy plastic melodies we hear all the time ” Not everything here is so cynical, although Choy’s tone of voice easily passes for sarcasm; on the contrary, it is stuffed with a healthy anger escaping from the post-punk guitars – dare we call the group’s sound a shaggy version of Arcade Fire, notably thanks to the presence of female voices – which never stifle the melodic, catchy impulses on The Mediumon the taciturn Epitaphthe almost pop I Am (I Was) or the amazing blues-rock Ballad of Billywhich precedes the long groove soul rock Lost on the Red Mile in conclusion. The kind of album for which the pleasure increases with each new listening.
