All Montrealers will have to adopt the blue bin for recycling in the medium term, following an agreement recently concluded between the metropolis and Éco Entreprises Québec.
No more plastic bags and gray bins: in the medium term, a single container will be used throughout the City. And even beyond.
“There will be a standardization of collection tools, namely recovery bins,” indicated Marie-Claude Rivet of Éco Entreprises Québec, in an interview earlier this week. “It’s going to be the same blue everywhere in Quebec. […] It won’t change the 1er January 2025 in the morning, but ultimately, that will change,” she added.
This is because from the start of next year, Éco Entreprise Québec will have to assume the costs of collecting and sorting recyclable materials throughout the province. This organization represents all companies that market packaging.
In recent days, it signed an agreement with the City of Montreal to set the terms and conditions for the operation of the recycling system in the metropolis.
This agreement “opens the door to savings of at least 20 million per year, to improved performance and to a renewal of relationships with recyclers,” rejoiced the City of Montreal in a press release. “Thanks to this agreement, our citizens will be able to continue to benefit from an efficient recyclable materials collection service, which will even be made easier. »
Mme Rivet indicated that the agreement between Éco Entreprise Québec and the City of Montreal was one of the first to be signed. In the coming months, all municipalities in Quebec will have to do the same, individually or in groups.
