On Wednesday, September 21, the 13 Hours column “A gesture for the Earth” encounters a man who recycles water from the shower to use it for flushing the toilets.

In a house, tap water does not go entirely to the sewer. “We saw all summer in lots of villages the water stopped at the tap, in people’s homes (…). We must do everything to save this resource”, assures Christophe Dufour. At home, the water used is recycled. She serves a second time, in the toilets. “Per day, per person, it’s between 30 and 40 liters (…) just for toilet flushes”says Christophe Dufour.

In the garage, a tank collects waste water from the three bathrooms. They are filtered, then relaunched in the circuit thanks to a pump towards the three toilets. It represents an investment of 200 euros and the installation was easy, says the owner. According to his calculations, the family could save up to 200 euros per year on their water bill. In Melun (Seine-et-Marne), a plumber also offers a recovery system. “With each flush, we consume 9 litres”he explains.
