The Press reported this morning that the Ministry of Education’s “Reply now” campaign had made it possible, as of August 19, to recruit 371 teachers, the majority of whom are substitutes. The success of this campaign, Minister Roberge explained before the start of the school year, would contribute to having a teacher in each class.

According to the most recent report provided Thursday by Minister Roberge’s office, on September 2, 600 teachers were recruited through this campaign.

How many files are still to be processed in the school service centres? The minister’s office could not give us this information.

According to figures obtained by The Press under the Access to Information Act, almost half of the 6,000 applications had been rejected by school service centers (2,745), and the rest of them (2,965) had not yet been processed on August 19.

Despite the new hires confirmed by Quebec, the fact remains: schools in the province are short of teachers. According to the most recent report from the Ministry of Education, 160 full-time positions are still to be filled in the schools.
