Recovery Committee | The Liberals want to define their purpose

(Quebec) At its lowest in the polls and after a historic defeat, the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) is preparing the foundations for its revival. He is setting up a committee, co-chaired by former editorialist André Pratte and MP Madwa-Nika Cadet, which will table a report next fall updating the party’s values and defining its raison d’être.

Accompanied by the president of the party, Rafaël Primeau-Ferraro, Mr. Pratte and Mr.me Cadet presented Thursday the members of their committee, on which sit among others Antoine Dionne Charet, long-time activist and son of former Prime Minister Jean Charest, as well as former deputies such as the former interim leader Pierre Arcand and former ministers Lucie Charlebois and Jean D’Amour.

“The government of the Coalition avenir Québec is not eternal. History shows us that one day, perhaps sooner than we think, Quebecers will seek an alternative solution. When that day comes, the Quebec Liberal Party must be ready. And to be ready, before drafting a future electoral platform, the party and its activists must immerse themselves in [leurs] core values,” said André Pratte.

“It doesn’t mean we’re going to change who we are. What that means is that as a political current, we must evolve [et] adjust the embodiment of our values to new contexts,” he added.

A report before the race

The committee’s report will be presented in the fall at an official party event in front of activists. To date, the PLQ has approximately 20,000 members. Important detail: the next leader of the party will not be linked to the conclusions formulated by the recovery committee. Race rules will be announced later this year, in the spring or fall.

“The values of our party are strong. We know them well. They are universal and we will not change them, ”said Liberal Party President Rafaël Primeau-Ferraro on Thursday.

Our role will not be to write the party’s next election platform, but to provide a framework, a guide, a compass […] a piece of the puzzle, a crucial piece, a piece of the foundation.

Madwa-Nika Cadet, member of the PLQ

According to the most recent Leger poll, published earlier this month in The duty, the PLQ brings up the rear of voting intentions among the parties represented in the National Assembly. As of February 28, the polling firm assessed that the Liberals obtained the support of 14% of voters, gathering barely 4% of support among Francophones.
