Rental evictions reached a new record in 2023, with 21,500 households evicted by the police, an increase of 23% over one year, franceinfo learned from consistent sources, confirming information from the World. While emergency accommodation is saturated, associations fear that these evictions will increase further.
“Our priority is to prevent unpaid rent, while ensuring the rigorous application of legal decisions,” defends the Ministry of Housing at the end of the winter break, which each year suspends rental evictions from November 1 to March 31 inclusive.
140,000 people deported each year
The ministry argues that the annual average over the period 2020-2022 “remains significantly lower” to the record of 2019, i.e. before the Covid crisis. Only evictions involving the police are counted here, whereas until 2019, the figures for court decisions and end of proceedings were also published.
According to the Abbé Pierre Foundation, citing figures transmitted by the Interministerial Delegation for Accommodation and Access to Housing (DIHAL), around 140,000 people are evicted from their accommodation each year due to unpaid rent.
