Record number of COVID-19 cases in Montreal

The situation continues to worsen in Montreal, with 6,643 positive cases recorded in one week, a high not reached since the start of the pandemic and the peak of the second wave in January 2021.

The last record of weekly cases of infections in the metropolis was reached on January 3, 2021, with 6,639 positive cases reported, a ceiling that has just been exceeded.

Between Sundays 12 and 19 December, the number of reported cases quadrupled in the metropolis with a high concentration of cases in neighborhoods so far less affected. The positivity rate reached 12.2% on Sunday. For two weeks, the highest incidence (number of cases per 100,000 population) has been concentrated in the districts of Plateau-Mont-Royal, Rosemont-Petite-Patrie and Villeray.

According to data released by the Direction régionale de santé publique de Montréal on Monday, the largest number of cases detected on Sunday, 144, are found in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough, followed by Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, with 109 cases, and 100 cases in Villeray-Parc-Extension-Saint-Michel.

The local network of services encompassing the CLSC des Faubourgs and the Plateau Mont-Royal would currently display the large number of active cases in the metropolis, with more than 935 active cases, figures from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec reveal. (INSPQ) and an incidence rate of 591 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Rosemont-Petite-Patrie sector has the highest incidence in the city, with 604 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and 688 active cases.

The situation continues to evolve just as quickly in other regions, particularly in Montérégie where the incidence rate has doubled in one week, as well as in the Capitale-Nationale, and in the Bas Saint-Laurent.
