Pelack of recruitment, overwork, tired staff, unattractive salaries, cascading resignations… On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, zoom in on a sector which is going through an unprecedented crisis, with dramatic repercussions on the quality of care for people with disabilities.
Are the homes of the most vulnerable threatened? Fifty-two residents with multiple disabilities live in this specialized structure near Lyon. They are now faced with a lack of personnel. For lack of anything better, we regularly call in temporary workers. A problem for the privacy, the dignity of the residents. Their comfort is impacted, their health too would be threatened today.
That day at the center, there is only one caregiver. Difficult for Adeline Gaillemain to be on all fronts. “What worries me the most is to have surveillance on all these residents, whose health is starting to deteriorate”, confides the nursing assistant. An increasingly difficult situation for Cyrille Birtegue. “I have to wait, all alone in my room. For me it’s very complicated”, he explains. At the center now, the shortage of staff is such that the director is forced to send residents back to their families on weekends. The Prime Minister announced on November 9 an increase in the salary of caregivers: 183 euros per month, insufficient for the sector, which calls for a national mobilization on December 7.
