“Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire” review: Zack Snyder’s (successful) comeback

Only Netflix can offer Zack Snyder the space to develop a science fiction feature film, the first part of which is now available and in which Sofia Boutella, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman and Charlie Hunnam take the lead. replica.

THE Snyderverse of the DC/Warner studios having been eliminated, the filmmaker is now embarking on a science fiction epic, Rebel Moon, whose inspirations are multiple.

Here, to put it very simply, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former soldier of the Imperium, joins the resistance in order to defend her planet with the help of her friend Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), the former general Titus (Djimon Hounsou), the mercenary Kai (Charlie Hunnam) and the robot Jimmy, whose voice is provided by none other than Anthony Hopkins.

Zack Snyder leaves no one indifferent. We like or not his style, we like or not his characters with their often hollow dialogues, we like or not his incredible mix of references to popular culture. And Rebel Moon is in line with his previous films, including his director’s cut of Justice League.

Obviously, the sets of Rebel Moon immediately resemble the very first Star Wars from 1977, but we have to dig deeper to appreciate all the visual richness of the universe created and in which we will find references, sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle, to Star Trek, The iron Throne, Dune, The matrix, FireflyGrimm tales… Zack Snyder also does not hesitate to reference himself by using elements already explored in his previous feature films such as the Nazi uniforms with steampunk style or the fights mixing martial arts and iconography of video games Sucker Punch and even the colorization of 300 in several flashback scenes.

In Zack Snyder’s work, visuals and sound are just excuses to force the viewer to establish connections from their collective memory. Gladiators, a blacksmith, the training of a wild animal, freed slaves or even an attempted rape are only the pretext to once again examine his favorite themes which are the search for freedom, fatality, the hopeless fight for overcome or even the violence imposed on women.

We can complain about the poor quality of the dialogues which, in fact, are only there to explain or emphasize what the images cannot show. But Rebel Moon does not claim to be a philosophical film Dune, Zack Snyder knows his strengths… and his weaknesses only too well.

This Rebel Moon successful therefore in no way deviates from the filmmaker’s filmography and, like all his previous works, must be appreciated on a screen of comfortable dimensions, the sound loud enough for one to be enveloped and therefore immersed in this new universe and of which it is not All we have to do is wait for the rest.

Rebel Moon – part 1: child of fire is available via Netflix from December 22.
