“Real rubbish”: angry motorists who use the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge

A new crisis has struck motorists who use the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge since the announcement of the loss of a traffic lane due to the appearance of a new crack.

Starting November 27, three out of six lanes will be open to traffic for at least one year.

“Dynamic traffic management” will be ensured by the Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, confirms its spokesperson, Sarah Bensadoun, in an interview on LCN.

Two lanes will be available towards Montreal between 12:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and one lane towards Vaudreuil-Dorion.

Between 11:30 a.m. and 10 p.m., “it will be the opposite scenario, the rest of the time we will have one lane of traffic per direction”.

The new configuration forces the closure of the artery from Friday November 24, 11:59 p.m., to Monday November 27, 5 a.m.

“We will have to be extremely patient, because it will be long, very complicated to get over the bridge. We know that there will be delays of more than an hour at times. It won’t be easy for next year. We are fully aware of this,” she continued.

For residents of Vaudreuil-Dorion and Saint-Lazare, in Montérégie, the news caused a strong reaction.

Comments multiplied below the publication of Liberal MP Marie-Claude Nichols reporting the complete closure of the bridge this weekend.

“What negligence in planning the lifespan of infrastructure… we all pay for the incompetence of the MTQ,” wrote Frederic Bernier.

“By taking the 20 off Hardwood Boulevard, it would help so much. But no. No intelligent planning. Real rubbish,” continues another user on Facebook.

The latter refers to the portion of the A-20 located in L’Île-Perrot which has traffic lights.

Mme Bensadoun maintains that the ministry will synchronize “traffic lights, particularly for peak periods to facilitate fluidity”.

The transportation company Exo plans to add at least two train departures on the Vaudreuil-Hudson line.

The new bridge which will replace the current structure will be put into service gradually from the end of 2026, while the end of the work is planned for 2030.
