Activists from SOS Racisme, posing as landlords, asked 136 real estate agencies not to accept rental applications from people of non-European origin. Nearly half has accepted.
Activists from SOS Racisme tested 136 real estate agencies by telephone, pretending to be landlords who wanted to rent a property. Once the financial guarantees had been established, the bogus landlords asked the agencies to discard the rental files of people of non-European origin.
48.5% of the agencies did not object to discrimination, a quarter left it to the landlords to sort out the files, and a quarter took it upon themselves to discriminate against prospective tenants. Since the first test carried out by SOS Racisme three years ago, the National Real Estate Federation has set up training for agency managers. But, for SOS Racisme, its effects are not yet felt.
