Quebec mountaineer Marie-Pier Desharnais is unstoppable. By climbing Mount Sidley in Antarctica on Tuesday, she became the first woman in the Americas to reach the seven highest volcanic peaks in the world.
No less than 16 days after climbing Mount Vinson, also in Antarctica, the Victoriavilloise reached the summit of Mount Sidley, which rises to 4285 meters above sea level, Tuesday at 3:55 p.m. She was part of a group of four people who was split in two because of the risk of frostbite linked to the speed of the ascent.
“It was magical up there with the snow structures in the shape of giant mushrooms! But it was so cold, responded Desharnais in a press release. I have never experienced such temperature conditions. »
That’s not all. At the same time, the 37-year-old adventurer completes her Apex woman project, whose mission was to actively participate in the women’s egalitarian movement by raising the female footprint on five of the highest peaks or the most difficult peaks on the planet, namely the Ojos of Salado, Everest, K2 as well as the Vinson and Sidley mountains.
Desharnais always seeks to reach the highest mountain peaks of each of the seven continents. She only has Denali, Alaska, to climb to become the first woman to achieve the feat. Its goal is to launch an assault on Denali in June 2023.
