RCMP investigating interference allegations against Michael Chong, Erin O’Toole and Jenny Kwan

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announces that it has opened investigations into allegations of foreign interference against three federal MPs: Conservatives Michael Chong and Erin O’Toole and New Democrat Jenny Kwan.

Acting RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme confirmed the existence of the investigations Tuesday morning during a Commons committee meeting.

Duheme said more than 100 investigations into broader foreign interference are underway in Canada. He also said police stations allegedly run by Beijing have been closed amid ongoing investigations.

The commissioner told MPs on the committee that he had been in contact with election officials about allegations of foreign interference. But he also said the RCMP first learned of the allegations from the media.

Mr. Duheme also indicated that he did not know if the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had transmitted to the RCMP a memorandum from 2021 on alleged interference targeting members of Parliament, and that he did not recall not have seen her.

But he explained that the information would only have been provided to the federal police anyway if they had reported an alleged criminal act.
