Cantlay, the FedEx Cup champion, went 67 (minus-4) and posted a minus-9 overall after two rounds. He has a two-stroke lead ahead of Robert Streb.
After committing a bogey at the 11and and 14and holes, Cantlay pulled himself together with a fine birdie streak on the course at Harbor Town Golf Club.
Streb also shot 67. He looked set to sit atop the standings heading into the weekend when he netted a birdie at his 17and pennant. Cantlay, however, changed his plans.
Cameron Young, a PGA Tour rookie, followed an excellent round of 63 with a 73 that slipped him into a tie for third.
Young is accompanied by Joel Dahmen (67), Cameron Tringale (67), Erik van Rooyen (67) and Aaron Wise (68). They are all three strokes behind Cantlay.
Canadians Adam Hadwin (69) and Corey Conners (72) share 14and step, with a cumulative score of minus-4. Their compatriots Adam Svensson (73) and Roger Sloan (71) point to 23and square, minus-3.
