The count of victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria amounts to 11,700 dead, on the evening of this Wednesday, February 8. The next 24 hours will be crucial in trying to save the last victims.
Mariam, a little girl from Turkey, was stuck with her little brother under a stone for two days. They are among the children who were rescued from the rubble with cries of joy. In Syria, little Mohammed is also buried in a stone prison for nearly 48 hours. The rescuers helped him hydrate with a plug, before managing to extract him.
Help slow to arrive
The more the hours pass, the rarer these miracles become. In many Turkish cities, residents are still waiting for help. Difficult climatic conditions hinder the arrival of the latter. Turkish President Erdogan, visiting the earthquake zone for the first time on Wednesday February 8, acknowledged shortcomings in relief during the first hours but assured that the situation is now under control. In the meantime, families are burying their dead, and thousands of bodies still have to be pulled from the rubble.
