Raptors win over Pistons, 119-118

(Toronto) Fred VanVleet had 35 points as the Toronto Raptors pulled off a 119-118 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.

VanVleet was 6-for-13 in three-point shooting and had eight assists.

He signed a third game of at least 30 points in February, in six games.

Pascal Siakam scored 28 points, eight more than Scottie Barnes.

Precious Achiuwa got the last of his 11 points with a crucial free throw, with 4.4 seconds left in the final quarter.

The final margin was a single point as Jaden Ivey then made a three-point shot, to the sound of the siren.

Achiuawa also grabbed 11 rebounds.

In his second game since being acquired from Spurs, Jakob Poeltl went two steals and three blocks. The seven-foot-one Austrian did his job well at the foot of the basket.

The Raptors overcame a 24-for-36 performance from the free throw line.

The Toronto club had a slim lead at the half, 53-52.

OG Anunoby missed a ninth game in a row with a left wrist injury.

Gary Trent was out with a left calf injury.

Coach Nick Nurse was missing for personal reasons. Adrian Griffin led the Raptors (27-31).

Occupying the 10e place in the East, Toronto will replay Tuesday night at home, against the Orlando Magic.

Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks caused the Raptors the most trouble with 33 and 21 points, respectively.

Late in the third quarter, Chris Boucher stole Burks and completed with a dunk, followed by a successful free throw. A big play, as the Raptors clung to a slim four-point lead. VanVleet quickly added a shot from long range to give the team an 84-74 lead.

Malachi Flynn saved 10 points with a long shot midway through the final quarter. Thereafter, the Raptors did just enough to pick up a fourth win in five games.
