Raptors 116 – Wizards 109 | Toronto win in overtime thanks to Fred VanVleet

(Washington) Fred VanVleet had two three-pointers in overtime on Saturday to guide the Toronto Raptors to a 116-109 win over the Washington Wizards.

The first of those key shots broke a 107-107 stalemate, with 1:46 remaining in extra time. The veteran had missed long shots earlier in overtime, as well as in the last minute of the fourth quarter.

VanVleet scored again with 43 seconds left in overtime.

Spotted by Scottie Barnes, he hit the mark from the left corner of the field, as in his previous success. This brought the count to 113-109.

Kristaps Porzingis missed a basket, Pascal Siakam grabbed the rebound and the streak led to a foul against Barnes. On the throw-in, the latter found Siakam for a dunk, with 14 seconds on the clock. The Cameroonian put the finishing touches with a free throw.

VanVleet delivered a six-for-11 outing from beyond the perimeter. Two nights earlier, against those same Wizards, he had posted just two for 11 in that aspect.

Reserve but used for 35 minutes, Gary Trent led the visitors with 26 points, one more than VanVleet. The latter also obtained 10 assists.

Trent was 4-for-7 in long-range shooting.

Pascal Siakam scored 15 points, Jakob Poeltl 14 and Barnes 12.

Montrealer Chris Boucher had nine points in 16 minutes, including an excellent pass straddling the third and fourth quarters. He then provided a dunk, an offensive rebound, a three-point shot and a steal.

His offensive rebound started a push that ended with a VanVleet free throw. His steal led to a two-point field goal for Trent.

The third quarter ended with VanVleet scoring a last-second three for an 86-79 lead in favor of the Toronto club.

The Raptors (32-33) will play again Monday night at 9 p.m. in Denver (RDS2, TSN4).

Toronto is in ninth place in the East, one game ahead of the Wizards.

Porzingis had 22 points including 16 in the first half, which ended 53-53.

Bradley Beal had 21 points, three more than former Raptor Delon Wright.

Kyle Kuzma added 16 points and Corey Kispert 12, coming off a 4-for-4 night on three-point shooting.
