A black background and tight shots of rapping mouths and eyes staring at the camera. Rapper Kanye West released a new and very minimalist clip this Wednesday, February 7, on his Instagram account. He sings there with his daughter North, aged 11.
Born from his marriage to the very media-focused Kim Kardashian, the pre-teen provides half of this new piece, her father’s voice only being heard after a minute and a half, in a style close to that of her first albums. The clip was viewed more than 3.5 million times in the first 10 minutes and more than 8 million times in one hour.
The titled song Talking / Once Again is part of his project Cultures, the first volume of which is supposed to appear on Friday February 9. The other two opuses are expected for March 8 and April 5. Dates that are difficult to be sure of. Cultures was originally scheduled for October 2023, but suffered numerous release postponements.
A listening party is, however, indeed scheduled for February 9 in Chicago. The album must therefore be revealed at the United Center. The approximately 23,000 seats in the sports hall were sold out in less than 7 minutes. Waiting is a well-oiled marketing strategy, which has even become the rapper’s main activity, to try to make people forget his excesses.
A post-controversy album
If we put aside tracks in collaboration with Dr Dre that leaked online last year, the most recent songs from Kanye West – who now goes by the name Ye – date from the album Donda released in 2021. Since then, the singer has been the source of numerous controversies. In particular, he made anti-Semitic remarks on various occasions which led to the end of his collaborations with Adidas, Gap and Balenciaga.
In December 2022, the American artist spoke frankly of his admiration for Adolf Hitler and more broadly for the Nazis during an interview on the set of the show “InfoWars”, presented by Alex Jones, a far-right conspiracy presenter. His words had led to the temporary suspension of his Twitter account.
The rapper is also known for having proposed to former US President Donald Trump, whose candidacy he supported, to join his electoral list. He also launched an improbable candidacy for the American election in 2020, during which he only received 70,000 votes.
