Future European Union sanctions against Russia must target “all the oligarchs directly or indirectly linked to Vladimir Putin’s regime”, asked Thursday, February 24 on franceinfo the MEP Place Publique Raphaël Glucksmann. The Russian president announced Thursday morning a “military operation” in Ukraine to, according to him, defend the separatists in the east of the country, despite the sanctions imposed by the West.

In a recorded video, Emmanuel Macron denounced “the most serious breach of peace in our Europe for decades” and claimed that “the sanctions imposed on Russia will be[aie]nt at the height of the aggression of which it is guilty”. Raphaël Glucksmann proposes that these “kleptocrats” related to Vladimir Putin must see “their assets in Europe frozen, seized, their bank accounts closed, their villas, yachts and chalets seized.”
“The pillars of this regime are kleptocrats who spend their money on us, which makes them susceptible to our reaction.”

The MEP also calls for “exclude Russian banks from the international system” and to “supply defensive weapons to Ukraine”. “Any weakness today would be an invitation to war, insists Raphaël Glucksmann. We absolutely must be taken seriously by the Kremlin.”
