A member of the Yukon Legislative Assembly since 2016, Ranj Pillai will be the territory’s new premier.
The Yukon Liberal Party announced Sunday that Ranj Pillai had been acclaimed leader by the party executive.
He will replace former Premier Sandy Silver, who announced in September that he was stepping down and did not intend to run in the 2025 Yukon general election.
A statement issued by Ranj Pillai thanks Sandy Silver for his leadership and says he looks forward to working with the former prime minister for the remainder of his term. The statement added that details of the swearing-in ceremony will be released soon, and those regarding the prime minister-designate’s plans for the future will follow.
Ranj Pillai inherits a minority government as the Yukon Liberals and Yukon Center Right Party each won eight seats in the 2021 election, but governs through a confidence and supply agreement with the New Democratic Party (NDP). ) from the Yukon, which holds three seats.
Ranj Pillai said he’s proud of what the Liberals have accomplished in the territory and says he’s excited for the future and ready to serve all Yukoners.
“I pledge to work hard, seek common ground, act strategically and fiercely defend Yukon’s interests,” Pillai said in the statement.
