It’s official: Ramadan will begin this Monday, March 11, announced the religious commission of the Grand Mosque of Paris on Sunday. “After consulting astronomical data and observations of the moon, the commission determined the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan 1445/H-2024 in France as March 11, 2024”we can read in a press release posted on X.
In this publication, the place of worship “sends best wishes to Muslims” and invites them to live this month of fasting “in piety” And “solidarity”. This month of Ramadan will end with Eid el-Fitr, the celebration of breaking the fast, around April 9.
The Grand Mosque of Paris specifies that these wishes are accompanied by prayers for “may this blessed month bring an immediate ceasefire and a just and lasting peace to Gaza.”
Strengthening the security of Muslim places of worship
In a note sent to prefects on Wednesday, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin asked that Muslim places of worship be protected, “as with all religious festivals of all religions”.
It emphasizes “the most sensitive and emblematic places and buildings (…) in coordination with the forces of Operation Sentinel”. The Minister of the Interior also called for paying particular attention to the celebrations of the night of destiny, around April 5, and the Eid el-Fitr festival, which marks the end of Ramadan, on the 9th or 10th. april.
This security occurs “in a context of increase in anti-Muslim acts during the year 2023 (+30%)”.
