Under the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine, nearly 200 people gathered this Saturday morning, Place Pie, in Avignon. Representatives of leftist and trade union parties, peace activists took turns at the microphone. Many young people from Avignon also made the trip to call for an end to the war.
In the crowd, the French rubbed shoulders with the Ukrainians, flags on their shoulders, and the Russians. Anna has lived in Avignon for several years. She throws an appeal to the Russian people. “The support of the French, of the Europeans, that’s good. But the solution is the Russians. They have to revolt against Putin”. A Russian mother also wanted to demonstrate: “I don’t want war, it has to stop now!”.
Several demonstrators ask French and European leaders to hit Russia hard, not necessarily militarily but financially. Many of them want help the Ukrainian people more concretelyby sending food or clothing or even by welcoming refugees.
