Rain returns to disrupt schedule at Wimbledon Tennis Open

Rain returned to the Wimbledon Tennis Open on day six of the grass-court tournament on Saturday, as only one match went to term before play was suspended for more than two hours on all courts exteriors.

Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, 13e seeded and semi-finalist at the French Open this year, was the first to complete a match, defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-2 in the third round on court number 3.

The Czech Petra Kvitova, double champion at the All England Club, did not have time to conclude hers before the arrival of the precipitation. When the rain started to fall on court number 2, she was leading 6-3, 4-5 against Serbian Natalija Stevanovic. On the return, Kvitova won the next three games, and the match, 6-3, 7-5.

Only Center Court and Number 1 Court are covered at the All England Club. Play in these two stadiums started as planned.

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the men’s favourite, was the first seed to step onto center court on Saturday, against Chilean Nicolas Jarry in a third-round duel.

Alcaraz needed three hours 55 minutes and four sets to knock out Jarry 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5. His next rival will be the winner of the match between 19th-seeded German Alexander Zverev and Italian Matteo Berrettini, presented on court number one later on Saturday.

In another match on center court, defending champion Elena Rybakina will face Katie Boulter.

On court number 1, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, seeded third, launched hostilities against the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. After conceding the first set 6-4, Medvedev responded by winning the next three sets, and the match, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

In the next round, Medvedev will face Czech Jiri Lehecka, who won a four-hour, three-minute marathon duel against 16th-seeded American Tommy Paul. Lehecka prevailed in five sets of 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 6-7(9), 6-2.

In the second match of the day on Court 1, second-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russian Anna Blinkova 6-2, 6-3.
