Originally, Quebec was to pay 40% and Ottawa the rest of this long-awaited section, nearly 10 years after the train disaster that left 47 dead and razed the entire downtown area of the municipality.
However, costs have exploded from an estimate of 133 million in 2018.
Instead, the federal government set aside $237 million in its last budget.
At a press conference in a factory in Lac-Mégantic on Thursday afternoon, François Legault criticized the federal government for not giving all the necessary information.
Before confirming whether Quebec will pay 40% of the bill, Mr. Legault said he wanted to know how much the project would cost.
The new railway line would bypass downtown Lac-Mégantic. It would be 12.5 km long and would pass through Nantes, the outskirts of Lac-Mégantic and Frontenac.
