Rafael Devers signs 11-year contract extension with Red Sox

(Boston) Rafael Devers signed an 11-year, $331 million contract extension with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Red Sox have yet to announce the signing.

Getting along with Devers, a two-time All-Star third baseman, was important for the Red Sox after star shortstop Xander Bogaerts, power hitter JD Martinez and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi had left the team as free agents.

The Red Sox and 26-year-old Devers agreed a day after the team signed the third baseman to a one-year contract worth $17.5 million to avoid arbitration.

Devers’ contract extension marks the longest offseason commitment for the Red Sox and chief baseball operations officer Chaim Bloom, supplanting the five-year, $90 million deal awarded to Japanese star Masataka Yoshida.

Devers has started the American on third base in the All-Star Game for the past two years. In 141 games last season, he batted .295 with 42 doubles, 27 home runs and 88 RBIs.

The Red Sox are trying to regroup after a 2022 season in which they went 78-84 in the East Division. A year earlier, they had 92 wins and reached the All-American Championship Series.
