“Rachmaninoff”: Steven Osborne | The duty

Steven Osborne, again and again. How not to underline the exceptional constancy of quality of the discographic production of this extraordinary pianist? Of Rachmaninoff, Osborne has already engraved the Studies-tablesthe 2and Sonata and the 24 Preludes, so many references. Here is an opportunity for us to revalue the underestimated 1D Sonata, especially since the third movement (also a concentrate of the composer’s art, with frequent reversals, like a kind of Russian Schumann) is one of the absolutely stunning moments on the disc. We will listen not only to the firmness of the fortissimos, never slammed, but also to the supreme art of transitions (around 4 min 20) leading to dreamy episodes of the greatest poetry (5 min 18). The Moments musical op. 16, main complement, have certainly been recorded recently by the excellent Jean-Paul Gasparian. But, at this level of magical success, the abundance of goods does no harm. It should be added that this success is completed by a perfect adjustment of the piano and an exceptional sound recording.
