Quentin Dupieux films a crazy moral tale with Alain Chabat

After the intrusion of a giant fly in the trunk of a car (mandibles), or the story of a serial killer tire (Rubber), Quentin Dupieux invites the couple Alain Chabat-Léa Drucker to move into a house where there is a secret that will turn their lives upside down. With Benoît Magimel and Anaïs Demoustier, Incredible but trueon screens Wednesday, June 15, is moving.

We must not say too much about the story, as long as Incredible but true is based on the surprises of the scenario. The atypical editing, which accelerates in the middle of the film, is thus totally integrated into the subject, around a journey through time. It is also based on waiting effects, the responses to which appeal to the fantastic, customary to the director.

Quentin Dupieux recalls a Jonathan Swift (Gulliver’s Travels) who would have become a filmmaker. The discovery of a trap (hatch trap) in their new house by Alain and Marie will prove to be a trap. The spatio-temporal escape on which their cellar opens is marvelous in itself, but will be at the source of the drama. Added to this is the character of Gérard, obsessed with sexual performance, who had an electronic penis transplanted to him… A story within a story.

The possibility of rejuvenating in the cellar of the house fascinates Marie, while Alain does not care. She will sink into depression, while he will go fishing. Humanist morality is easy to deduce, but Dupieux declines it in a form of its own, which he has made his salt. It plays with an image of a sitcom from the 80s, veiled by the passage of time, a television format that becomes cinema, because it is based on the subject of the film.

Chabat and Drucker work wonderfully, Benoît Magimel as a smug boss, stupid to eat hay, is irresistible, with a harassing nymphomaniac Anaïs Dumoustier. Humor dominates two-thirds of the film to turn into drama at the end. The rhythm takes an unexpected turn: Dupieux surfs on time, the theme at the heart of the film. Surreal, tinged with the absurd, Incredible but true will enchant fans of fantastic parables. It reconnects with the moral tales of the literary tradition, in a very contemporary update. Magical.
