Sunday November 28, France 2 pays tribute to an Indian heroine, Phoolan Devi, who became a gang leader and sat in Parliament after a tumultuous life.

She is a poor Indian among the poor. Scorned from an early age, Phoolan Devi will revolt and become gang leader, the queen of bandits. She is worshiped by the oppressed, but the state’s number one public enemy, before finally sitting in Parliament. Phoolan Devi was born in 1963 in a very poor village in northern India. Sold at the age of 11 to be forcibly married, she is beaten and raped every day. She finds the courage to flee her torturer, but it is a disgrace in her country. Having become an outcast, she will be banished from her village.

Thirsty for revenge, she becomes a gang leader. With her gang, she massacred 22 villagers from an upper caste for a gang rape she suffered. The symbol of the fight against social inequalities was born. But hunted down by all the police in the country, Phoolan Devi surrendered in 1983. Released after 11 years in prison without trial, she wants to make the voice of the oppressed heard in a legal way. She is standing for the legislative elections. In the villages where she campaigned, she was acclaimed and was elected in 1996 to the Parliament of New Delhi. She has laws passed for protection of the most disadvantaged. Phoolan Devi was finally murdered in 2001.
