Quebecers stuck in Cuba: “Sunwing left us in a shit hole”

Quebecers who were to return Saturday evening from a trip to Cayo Santa Maria are furious because of the treatment offered by the airline Sunwing.

A breakage would have grounded the plane of Sunwing flight 307 which was to take off for Montreal at the airport in Santa Clara, Cuba. After long hours of waiting, the passengers were transported to a hotel 30 minutes from the airport.

“We received a text message to tell us that our flight should finally be postponed to 9 am the next morning, said Ludovivc Murat to the QMI Agency. They tried to accommodate us in a hotel, but we took pictures to show the horror. You can not imagine. There were tarantulas. We even asked the attendants if it was safe and we were told by shaking our heads no.

In photos and videos, insects are visible on the floor and on a bed, while another shows bats at the entrance of the hotel.

“Sunwing left us in a shithole,” added the Montrealer. It’s not even a real hotel. It wasn’t even open for tourists.

There was a lack of room for all the travelers, according to him.

“I’m not here to exaggerate, I have no time to waste,” said Ludovivc Murat. We were sent to a hotel that lacked rooms. I did not sleep. There was no water. There were children crying, it does not happen.

“Everyone is disgusted”

For her part, Julie Beaudet of Otterburn Park, in Montérégie, was able to see the unsanitary conditions.

“They sent us to different hotels, explained the one who traveled with her parents and her two children. We were the last group. We were sent out, because the airport was closing. They weren’t even sure they had a place for everyone. […]. At the hotel, the first group before us wanted to go back to the airport, because it was unsanitary. They said there were spiders, snakes and lizards. I photographed a tarantula and bats.”

A resident of Laval did not hide her anger.

“Everyone is disgusted, said Louciné Solakian, there are even people who have decided to buy another flight to leave with another company.”

The passengers finally left Cuba for Montreal on Sunday afternoon.

A Sunwing customer service employee said Sunday that no one was available to answer questions from the media.
