Quebecer Otto Lopez claimed on waivers by the Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins claimed Quebecer Otto Lopez on waivers on Thursday.

Lopez was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants on Monday. The California club obtained it from the Toronto Blue Jays on February 13.

Lopez has only played nine games in the major leagues, the last in 2022 with the Blue Jays. He had six hits in 10 official at-bats, producing three runs.

Last year with the Buffalo Bisons at the AAA level, Lopez had a .258 batting average in 84 games. He produced 35 points and scored 48.

Lopez, 25, was born in the Dominican Republic, but grew up in Montreal.

The Marlins also announced that right-handed pitcher Eury Perez will undergo Tommy John surgery. His season is over.
