Quebecer Gabriel Diallo advances to the final round of qualifying for Flushing Meadows

Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo reached the third and final round of qualifying for the US Open on Wednesday, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 against France’s Titouan Droguet.

Overcoming eight double faults, Diallo managed to take the lead 5-4 in the breaks.

The two players had met during a Challenger in June in England — a match that Droguet had won 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in the first round.

Diallo, 22, is 144e at the ATP. He will find on his way Valentin Royer, 198e in the world. The Frenchman beat the American Ethan Quinn 6-1, 4-6 and 7-6 (6).

At the end of July, the Quebecer was the big winner of a Challenger tournament in Chicago.

In early August, Diallo lost in the first round of the Omnium Banque Nationale to Karen Khachanov, 23e to the ATP.

Later Wednesday, Canada’s Rebecca Marino will face Ariane Hartono of the Netherlands in the second round of qualifying.
