Quebec will create a vast network of protected cycle paths

(Quebec) There is not only the tram project in Quebec. The administration of Bruno Marchand presented on Tuesday a plan for the development of 150 km of protected cycle paths in the four corners of the city, in a model similar to the REV in Montreal.

The City of Quebec is giving itself 10 years to complete these 14 axes of its City Bike Corridor (CVC). The network will go from the city center to Val-Bélair, the airport or even east of Beauport. For the moment, given the progress of the planning work, officials cannot say whether car lanes will be removed.

In the capital, 50% of trips of less than one kilometer are made by car and 77% of those of less than 5 km. The City therefore believes that many citizens could choose to abandon the car if they have protected and safe bike paths.

“We don’t work for the most nervous, we work so that people feel really comfortable on the network,” summarizes Véronique Samson, transport planning advisor and urban planner at the City of Quebec.

The City estimates that $30 million will be needed to set up this network. It wants to complete 90 km within 5 years and 150 km by 2034. Like the REV in Montreal, the CVC tracks will be wider, physically separated from traffic and the network will have a visual identity.
